Right-of-Way Permits
The Building Department requires a right-of-way permit for any work within the public right-of-way, which is typically the area between, and including, the sidewalks on each side of the street. Contact the Department at (262) 342-1164 for information about procedures, permits and required submittals to perform work within the right-of-way.
This permit is typically required for items such as:
- Sidewalk and driveway replacement.
- Sanitary or water service repairs in the right-of-way.
- Public utility installation, i.e., electric, gas, telephone, cable TV
- Cases where construction equipment or dumpsters need temporary use of the right-of-way.
There is an administrative reimbursement fee for work done in the public right-of-way. The fees are:
- $200 Deposit +/- for excavation under pavement, or 12 inches or more, below grade
- $30 for "surface work," not under street pavement, such as sidewalk or drive approach replacement
- $30 for construction equipment, or dumpster permit

Dumpster & Construction Equipment Permit
The Department of Public Works requires a Dumpster and Construction Equipment Permit to allow a dumpster, container or similar removable storage container or construction vehicle within the right-of-way.
